Chapter Eleven

BRODIE

“Where is your head today?” Mak asked, banging her hands down on her keyboard for emphasis. A dissonant note rang out in the studio’s airy, live recording room. Instruments littered the space, with Cheese’s drum kit housed permanently in the back corner, opposite the sound booth.

It was on the tip of my tongue to argue, but she was right. I’d been distracted since Sunday night. Sitting on V’s bed, I’d let her see the darkest part of me and she’d made me feel like it wasn’t so shameful after all. I’d never realized how much of a gift that could be. I was used to ridicule at best, being seen as dangerous at worst. But she just saw the man I was now. The man who tried. The man who gave 100%.

She saw me.

All I’d wanted to do was lean in and kiss her. Taste that peach chapstick that smelled so good and made her mouth just a little glossy. And for a second there, I’d let myself hope that we’d get there. Get somewhere real.

But then I’d watched a cloud descend over her eyes. I didn’t know what had spooked her. It’d been eating at me ever since. “Sorry,” I said, dragging a hand roughly through my hair.

Mak exchanged a knowing look with Cheese, who twirled one of his sticks absently. She turned back to me and cocked a slender eyebrow. “Dude, you’re strung out.”

“No, I’m not,” I said, turning away to tune my violin. It didn’t need tuning, but I needed something to do so Mak wouldn’t read the truth in my eyes. I didn’t want to talk about this. Not while I was so confused and stressed. I wanted to talk to V, but she’d already pulled away. Calling her between festival engagements seemed like a bad idea right now.

“Okayyy,” Mak said. I turned to catch her and Cheese sharing another look. Cheese saw me, his eyes bulged and he immediately busied himself with his kit.

I sighed. “Do we wanna go again?” I asked them.

Mak gave me a pitying look that sent my hackles up. “I think we should take a beat. Get back at it when we’re fresh.”

I groaned. “Mak, come on. I’m fine. I’m focused. Can we just do this?”

Mak levelled a stern look at me. “Brodie. I’m not gonna have shitty sound on our album just ‘cause you wanna prove you’re not thirsting over the librarian.”

Sighing with exasperation, I threw up my hands. The words punched out of me resentfully before I could catch them. “Fine, I like the librarian! You happy? I like her. That what you wanna hear?”

I crossed my arms and glared at her, my jaw clenched painfully. She stared at me, mouth hanging open. Cheese looked anywhere but at the two of us. “Wait, like?” she said, a hint of excitement sparking in her eyes. She skirted the keyboard and came up to peer at me with her hands on her hips, her shift in energy making me wary. “I thought you just wanted to get into her pants.
